Illustrative best-practice case study

Hand over an analysis that a colleague can reproduce

A hypothetical research team is preparing tables and figures for a manuscript while transferring analysis responsibility to a colleague.

01

Starting situation

The main tables exist, but working files have unclear names and some transformations are documented only in email. The example describes a proposed workflow, not a verified engagement or measured improvement.

02

Best-practice intervention

  1. Preserve the source data in its approved location and document the analysis dataset separately.
  2. Prepare a data dictionary with variable meanings, coding, missingness and derived measures.
  3. Retain the R Project script or jamovi analysis file, together with software versions and settings.
  4. Link each manuscript table and figure to the step that produces it.
  5. Ask an authorised colleague to reproduce one major output using only the handover instructions. Record and resolve the gaps.

03

Illustrative handover

The package contains a README, permitted data or access instructions, analysis files, a decision log and identifiable outputs. The colleague records what ran, what required clarification and which software environment was used. These are proposed acceptance criteria; no performance gain is claimed.

04

How to assess the workflow

Verify that the supplied analysis reproduces the specified output within any explained numerical tolerance. Review the scientific choices separately: the right file organisation does not establish that the model, assumptions or conclusions are valid. Sensitive data remains subject to the project’s access restrictions.

05

Apply it to your project

Use the reproducible-analysis guide and consultation preparation guide to identify missing materials. Statistical consulting can address methods and interpretation, while figure development can connect presentation with the underlying analysis.

06

Sources and tools

  • R Project — Use scripts for statistical analysis and graphics.
  • jamovi — Use an accessible statistical interface and retain the analysis file.
